Traditional Chinese will use one 字 to replace the meaning of 詞.
For example: 諾不輕信,故人不負我;諾不輕許,故我不負人。
諾 → 諾言 promise, and this promise is a noun.
輕 → 輕易 easily
信 → 相信 believe
許 → 許諾 also means promise, but is a verb.
故 → 是故 therefore
負 → 辜負 disappoint

爭/徵
I don't know why people confuse these two words, but I saw a news report a while ago and a reporter confused them, so~
The word "爭", the first word that comes to my mind is "戰爭 war". Since it related to war, we know that this word has connotations of aggression, Therefore, words related to "爭", we have:
- 爭論 argument
- 競爭 competition
And this "徵" has the meaning of recruit:
- 徵召 call-up
- 徵文 call for papers
It also means to seek opinions from others, such as consult 徵詢.
Now, do you know which word to be use in the following sentence?
鷸蚌相O、漁翁O利
The answer is: 鷸蚌相爭、漁翁得利
需/須
The two 字 confuse people, but when we understand these two in English, the meaning becomes clear.
- 需要 means need
- 必須 means must
The difference between these two is that one is mandatory and the other is not.
For example:
- 出國的必需品:衣物和盥洗用具 Going abroad: You will need clothing and toiletries.
- 出國的必須品:護照 Going abroad: You must have a passport.
名/民
名聲/民生
When writing these two 字 with a pen, I think no one will be able to confuse them. But in today's world, with the popularity of the Internet, it is easy to make mistakes when typing words with the same pronunciation.
名聲 means reputation
民生 means people's livelihood
- 他們的 O O 不好
If you put 名聲 in this sentence, you say: "They have a bad reputation."
