羹(焿)

"羹" is a thick soup made with a meat or seafood base. The base is usually a pork bone broth with ingredients like bamboo shoots, mushrooms, and black fungus. Then, egg liquid and seasonings are added. Finally, black vinegar and coriander are added after the soup has thickened(勾芡). The final product has a sweet and sour taste.

• "勾芡" means to add a cornstarch slurry to create a thicker consistency.

The top part of this word is "羔," and the bottom part is "美."

•  “羔” means young sheep.
  For example：
• 迷途羔羊 (The Lost Sheep): The lost sheep is often used to describe people who have lost their way. It is a story from the Bible.
  Also comes from the Bible,
• 代罪羔羊 (Scapegoat): It refers to someone who takes the blame for another person's mistakes or crimes.
  
• “美”: The word "美" can have many different meanings, depending on the context. The most common meanings are "beautiful" or "pretty."

Why can these two words be combined to "羹"? I don’t know. 

And because it has many strokes, it is difficult to write, so some people write it as "焿".

• "焿" is a character specific to Taiwan, rarely seen elsewhere.
  In the past, some Taiwanese people found the character "羹" too difficult to write, so they changed it to "焿." Over time, this character gradually became the one commonly used.

• 分一杯羹：
• The origin of this saying comes from a historical event involving 項羽 and 劉邦.
  During the 楚漢相爭(Chu-Han Contention, 206–202 BCE.). 項羽 and 劉邦 were the two main contenders for power. 項羽 captured 劉邦's father and threatened to boil him alive. He sent a message to 劉邦, saying, "If you don't surrender, I will boil your father and make him into a soup."
  劉邦 replied, "We were 結拜兄弟(sworn brothers) in our youth. My father is your father. If you insist on boiling him, please remember to 'share a cup of the soup with me."
  Over time, the phrase "分一杯羹" came to mean sharing in the profits or benefits of someone else's success.
  
• 結拜兄弟： In Chinese culture, men often become sworn brothers as a sign of loyalty. They will treat each other like real brothers.
  
• 我們千辛萬苦創立了公司，而現在誰都想來分一杯羹。
  We did all the hard work of setting up the company, and now everyone wants to get in on the act.

• 閉門羹
  閉門 means to close the door.
  
  "閉門羹" refers to being turned away or refused entry when trying to visit someone.
  During the 唐 Dynasty (618-907 CE), a famous courtesan named 史鳳 was in high demand. Because so many people came to visit her, she had to categorize her guests. She only welcomed wealthy men and high-ranking officials.
  She would refuse to see anyone who was not one of the privileged few. Rather than turning people away directly, she instructed her servants to give unwelcome visitors a bowl of soup and have them wait outside.
  Eventually, everyone understood that being offered this particular bowl of soup was a polite way of being told, "You are not welcome here." 
  After that, the term "閉門羹" came to mean being given the cold shoulder or having a visit rejected.
• 你沒約好就跑去找她，吃閉門羹不是很正常嗎。
  It's normal to "be turned away" when you show up to see her without an appointment.
