I would like to share my thoughts on the similarities and differences between English and Traditional Chinese.
注音
English has alphabets. We use the alphabets to tell us how to pronounce a word. Traditional Chinese also has 注音 to indicate how to pronounce 字.
A word 字、詞
字 likes a word is a single unit of language that has meaning and can be spoken or written. So even though we have 注音, we do not use 注音 as a word. Since the official use of 注音 was in the 1910s, before then, if you want to know the pronunciation of 字, all you can do is memorize the pronunciation of it.
Two or more 字 are called 詞. We could say 詞 is composed of 字. 詞 cannot be separated, otherwise, it will be meaningless or have a different meaning.
For example, Noun we translate it to名詞, if you separated 名 and 詞,it will not be a Noun, it will mean name and words
