In the last video, I introduced the 部首 of creatures and ended with 豬, in today's video, let's continue with the 部首 that related to creatures.
First one is
馬 horse
To make a horse go slower or stop by pulling on its reins for control, or to make a horse carry people or things on its back, is to 馴 or 馭domesticate.
And when horses carry people or things on their backs, this action is called 馱.
An animal that, like a horse, can be ridden by humans or used to carry heavy things, you can use it as transportation in the desert, is called 駱駝 camel.
The next one is
魚 fish
A fish is an animal that lives in the water, has fins鰭, a body covered with scale鱗, and breathes through a gill鰓.
Someone who catches fish for a living is a fisherman.
Now that we know the 部首 of creatures on the land and in the water, what about the sky?
we have
bird 鳥and 隹short-tailed bird
Normal birds fly in the sky like 老鷹 eagle or 烏鴉 crow
The world's largest bird, which can run but not fly, is the 鴕鳥 ostrich.
Note that 駱駝, 鴕鳥, and the word 馱. they are pronounced the same, but have different meanings, and two of their 部首 look the same, so don't mix them up.
隹short-tailed bird
The most common short-tailed birds are chicken雞 and sparrow麻雀.
Their measure word is 隻, we use 隻 for number counting.
For example
- 一隻雞 one chicken
Since we already know the 部首 of creatures, let's take a chance to look at their measure word
- 兩隻狗 two dogs
- 三隻貓 three cats
Now, you know, our final 部首 is
虫
In 部首8, I introduced 疊字, which is to stack a word with two or more times. It is used to strengthen the meaning of the word itself or to emphasize the characteristics of the word. So, stack this 虫 three times, we will get the word 蟲 bug or worm.
The shape looks like a bug which is an insect 昆蟲, we have a 蜻蜓 dragonfly.
The shape looks like a worm and has a long, narrow, soft body without arms or legs, we have a 蛇 snake.
