Taiwan horror movie: The Tag-Along (The Little Girl in Red)

In April 1987, a family took a trip to the mountains of 台中(Taichung). A few weeks later, one of the family members died suddenly. They watched the video of the trip after the funeral to remember their family. After carefully watching the video, it was found that there was a green object on the face of the dead person, as if something was covering his face, and a girl dressed in red followed them on this trip, but no one knows who the girl is.

They are sure that they were the only ones on the mountain path at that time, so who is the little girl in red and why is she following them? The entire family is overcome with fear as people begin to die one by one...

This story is an urban legend. The movie "The Tag-Along" is based on this legend and was released in Taiwan on November 27, 2015.

Before we watch a movie or TV series, we should have a basic understanding of the cultural background of the show. In today's video, I'm going to show you the cultures and the stories behind them.

First one is

臉泛青光

Long ago, people believed that a green flame represented the soul of a person, so if someone's face was green, it meant that person was going to die, or worse, that person was a ghost. That's why a green object on the face of the dead person was frightening to the family.

Now back to The movie 'The Tag-Along'

's grandmother is missing. 's girlfriend, 怡君, is a radio host. She talked about the missing person on her show and hoped that people could help find 's grandmother. Some callers reported seeing an elderly lady who looked like 偉's grandmother near a mountain entrance.

偉 and 怡君 check surveillance with the building's entrance guard. When they looked at the monitor, they were frightened by the video. The video showed a girl in a red dress leading a grandmother, also wearing a red dress, into the mountains.

紅衣厲鬼

Why is a little girl in a red dress leading your grandmother up the mountain so scary?

It is said that Ghost in Red has the strongest resentment.
Red is usually used for happy occasions in Chinese culture, like a wedding, so if you die at such an event, you must regret it, and will feel the strongest resentment, right?

Also, in Hong Kong movies it is said that people who commit suicide wearing red clothes will become ferocious ghosts and take revenge on the one who bullied or betrayed them.

So, the ghost in the red and the ghost in the white, which one do you think is scarier?

In one scene, Grandma comes back from the mountain, crying and screaming: is in danger, he's going to die, it's all my fault, I said 's name, I said his name.
Why is it so terrible when you say someone's name in the mountain?

魔神仔 (Mo-sin-a)

We usually use Taiwanese Hokkien to pronounce it, is a monstrous creature in Taiwanese folklore. They are usually depicted as human-like beings and their bodies are short and furry. They live in the mountains and will lure people away to remote places like mountain forests or caves. Usually an elderly person or a child.

When the rescuers find the survivors, they will all be in a state of trance, and they will say that they are being hospitality by a kind person, but they don't have any memory of who that person is. They think they're having a great meal every day. But in the hospital, the doctor finds insects, earthworms, leaves, and soils in their stomachs.

So if 魔神仔 knows your name, it will be easier to get you, and if it gets you, it will feed you something disgusting.

The first movie of this series has a happy ending. 怡君 finds 偉  and they go back to their normal lives for a while until...

The sequel "The Tag-Along 2" was released on August 25th, 2017.
The plot of the movie is based on the religion of the 虎爺. As you know, Taiwan is a polytheistic country. Polytheism is the belief in multiple deities, which usually have their own religious sects and rituals.

虎爺

is a Taoist deity that takes the image of a tiger. But there are no tigers in Taiwan, so this belief was brought by immigrants. According to legend, it is the patron saint of children and pets.

乩身

is a spirit medium, a person believed to have been chosen by a particular spirit as the earthly vehicle for divine expression.

The Tag-Along: The Devil Fish was released on November 23, 2018.

人面魚

The movie is based on another famous Taiwanese urban legend, a horror story in which three men caught and grilled a fish in central Taiwan, only to see a face appear as they began to eat it, and meanwhile they heard an old woman's voice asking them in Taiwanese Hokkien: "Is the fish meat tasty?"

Actually, this newspaper was published in 1995, I remember I was scared by this picture.

Everyone at school was talking about this news, and then a lot of horror stories came out at that time.
