Fall is a time of harvest. So in today's video, we're going to take a look at the 部首 that related to plants.
艸
is a generic term for grass, has two types 艸艹, the most common is this one⺿
Many plants use 艸 as their 部首 because it grows over much of the earth's surface.
My name 若 when used as a noun is a kind of herb, so it uses 艸 as 部首 , but it's an ancient word, we no longer use it as a noun.
Besides grass, flowers and their smell also use 艸 as 部首.
so 花 flower, and 芬芳 fragrant.
- 花 flower
- 芬芳 fragrant
竹
bamboo has two types 竹𥫗, 部首 will be this one.
Bamboo is hard and flexible. It is a good material to make many things.
For example, 箏 Chinese plucked zither is an instrument.
筆Pen, Chinese pens were originally made out of bamboo. They are used in the same way as dip pens, dipped in ink to write.
Also made out of bamboo, we have 箱box and 籃basket
- 箏 Chinese plucked zither

- 箱 box
- 籃 basket
禾
is a generic term for grain, so we have 穀 grain
Grain is harvested in the fall, so 秋季fall season
In ancient times, the harvest could be used as money to pay government tax. so 稅 tax used 禾 as 部首.
- 穀 grain
- 秋季 fall season
- 稅 tax
米 rice
Husking the grain, you will get a small, tiny granule that can be cooked and eaten as food.
So granule 粒 means a small piece. After grinding the granules, you get flour粉.
Rice is a sticky substance that sticks to any surface it touches, ancient people used it as an adhesive.
So sticky 粘. There is a word that looks similar to 黏 and has the same meaning and pronunciation, but has a different 部首 from 粘 and is more common.
- 米 rice
- 粒 granule
- 粉 flour
- 粘/ 黏 sticky
In addition to producing food, grains can also be used to produce beverages. What I mean is alcohol.
酉
is an ancient word for 酒alcohol. Since it's alcohol, it's related to fermentation 發酵
Vinegar 醋 and some sauces 醬 are fermented, so they also use 酉 as 部首.
