The Subtle Differences Between: 唱和、唱反調、一搭一唱

These three words look similar but have very different meanings. Let's learn how to distinguish between 唱和、唱反調、一搭一唱

Sing from the same hymn sheet

Originally, it referred to one person singing while others followed, or one poet writing a poem to express a sentiment, to which another poet would respond with their own poem. Now, it primarily refers to coordinating with each other in terms of action or opinion, or having the same stance or goal.

The term 附和 has a similar meaning, but it places a greater emphasis on the speaker lacking their own thoughts and merely voicing the opinions of others. Be careful not to confuse 附和 with the similar-sounding term 符合.
To win the debate competition, we must sing from the same hymn sheet to make our arguments more convincing.
He merely echoed his boss's opinion without offering any new suggestions.

Sing a different tune

To deliberately propose a contrary opinion or take an opposite course of action.
    • When everyone was excitedly discussing the weekend travel plans, he suddenly sang a different tune, saying we should stay home to save money.

Chime in

This term can be used in a conversation when one person speaks, and another immediately joins in to express agreement or to provide supplementary information.
You ate the entire pizza, and you're still saying it wasn't good?!
Exactly! Do you have to eat the plate too for it to count as good?
Watching them play off each other like that is hilariously frustrating!
Furious:It is most often used when someone is annoyed or angry because of someone else's behavior. Its usage differs from the traditional Chinese medicine concept of "火氣大."
      • "火氣大" refers to the body being in a state of internal heat and/or inflammation. This imbalance may cause physical symptoms such as a dry mouth and tongue, mouth ulcers, and constipation
