In this episode, we will break down the characters 職 and 業. Although they both relate to "work," they focus on different aspects of "job".
職業 Occupation
Refers to the specific category of work or position an individual holds. This is the standard, formal term for "job" or "occupation."
In casual conversation, people usually say 工作. However, you will see 職業 on government forms, bank applications, or formal profiles.
例句:
- 他現在在做什麼工作?
What does he do for work right now? - 若您目前待業,職業欄可以空白不填沒有關係。
If you are currently between jobs, it is fine to leave the 'Occupation' field blank.
就職 To Take Office
To formally take office or officially start a job. This term emphasizes the act of assuming a specific position, often implying a sense of formality, ceremony, or high rank.
例句:
- 總統在就職典禮上宣誓就職並發表演說。
The president was sworn in and gave a speech at the inauguration ceremony.
辭職 To resign / To quit
Refers to the act of voluntarily leaving or giving up a job or position.
In spoken Taiwanese Mandarin, you can also use '我不做了' or '我不幹了' to express 'to quit.' Both literally mean 'I am not doing this anymore,' but '我不幹了' carries a much stronger tone.
例句:
- 由於無法適應高壓的工作環境,她決定辭職。
She decided to quit because she couldn't adapt to the high-pressure work environment. - 她大叫「我不幹了!」,然後怒氣沖沖地走出辦公室。
She shouted, "I quit!" and stormed out of the office.
怒氣沖沖 is a descriptive phrase that functions as an adjective and describes a state of extreme anger or fury. Its literal meaning is "rage surging."
轉職 To change profession / (Gaming) Class Change
Refers to the process of transitioning from one occupation or industry to another. This may involve completely different work content, skill requirements, and professional cultures.
This term often reminds people of role-playing video games. In English-language games, this is called a "class change."
轉換跑道 This is a very common expression in Taiwan. It compares your career to a running track or runway. Using this phrase implies that you are leaving your current professional field to pursue an entirely different one. It's more descriptive and slightly less rigid than the term "轉職."
例句:
- 我從弓箭手轉職成魔法師了。
I changed my class from Archer to Mage. - 他在科技業工作了十年,現在決定轉換跑道,回鄉下開民宿。
He worked in the tech industry for ten years, but now he has decided to switch tracks and open a B&B in the countryside.
