Cultural Note: 一下

Sometimes you will hear people say “請問一下”. What does “一下” mean? It can mean:
  • A single physical action, often used for clapping, knocking, or patting.
He lightly knocked on the door once.
  • A very short period of time or a quick action.
Wait a moment, I'll be right there.
  • Attached after a verb, indicating doing an action briefly. It softens the tone and makes it sound less demanding.
To ask around / to inquire briefly.
To teach briefly / to show someone how to do something.
To take a quick look.
So, “請問一下” means: "May I take a quick moment of your time to ask a question?" It makes the inquiry sound much more polite, casual, and friendly than just saying "請問".

Let's see the difference in action.
Excuse me, could you tell me where the almond powder is?
Excuse me, could you tell me where the chocolate tarts are?
